Abhishek Sharma has proven to be a real gem for Sunrisers Hyderabad in IPL 2024. He seems to be getting better with every match, displaying increasing maturity at the crease. Clarity of thought in shot-making, ability to manipulate the field and consistency are qualities that should draw the attention of national selectors sooner rather than later.
Sharma’s hunger to perform is evident, as he consistently seeks to make an impact every time he walks out to bat. His growth as a player has been an asset for SRH. His aggressive yet calculated approach at the top of the order has given his team strong starts, putting the opposition on the back foot inside the first six overs. This season, he has adapted to different match situations, whether anchoring the innings or cutting loose.
Against Punjab Kings, Sharma maintained his aggressive approach, attacking the bowlers from the start. Despite SRH losing Travis Head on the first ball, Sharma didn’t hesitate or adopt a cautious strategy. His counterattack immediately shifted the momentum back in favour of SRH. Sharma’s decision to take on the bowlers despite the setback was important. It put pressure on the bowlers during the Powerplay and laid a solid foundation in the chase of 214. He kept things simple and showed clear understanding of his role in the team.
A tally of 467 runs at 38.91 and a strike-rate of 209.41 with 41 sixes — these are serious numbers. The combination of technical skill, mental fortitude and a relentless drive to succeed has made Sharma a standout performer in IPL 2024. His performances are not only crucial for SRH’s success in the playoff matches, they may also open the door for him at the international level, when the selectors take stock and reassess after the T20 World Cup.
